Breeding seasons
Breeding seasons group the pairs of each campaign and let you close the breeding without deleting information. That way you can end a season, separate pairs and keep statistics, clutches and history.
Active season
The app keeps one active season for new pairs. From the seasons screen you can check the current season and the previous ones, with their status and number of pairs.
An active pair belongs to the current season. When it is separated or the season ends, the pair is archived with an end date.
Tap a season in the list to see its options: View statistics, Breeding report, Change the year and, depending on its state, End breeding season or Reopen season. If no season is open, the screen offers New season.
Starting the next season
To form the pairs for the coming season, do it in this order:
- When breeding is over, in Pairs open the ⋮ menu and use End breeding season. The season closes and the pairs stay formed, except the ones you choose to end; for those it asks where each bird goes.
- At the end of the dialog, leave Open a new season on and choose the Season year: next year, if you want it to count for it already. With that season open, new birds are proposed with that year in the ring. Also when ringing the chicks from the clutch. If another bird already wears the ring you are about to use, the app tells you which one and offers to correct the number, open that bird, free the ring or end the season and open the next one.
- Form the new pairs with New Pair, as usual (see Pairs and clutches). From then on they count in the new season.
You can form next season's pairs before ending the season: ending the season does not undo them. End the ones you do not want to keep by choosing them in the sheet (those without a clutch, all, or one by one). Pairs with a clutch in progress keep breeding unless you choose them, and also count in the new season.
If you already ended the season without opening another, open it in Breeding seasons, in the ⋮ menu of Pairs, with New season.
End breeding season
From Pairs, open the ⋮ menu and use End breeding season. Before applying it, the app shows:
- how many active pairs there are and how many have a clutch in progress;
- which pairs are ended: none by default; you can choose those without a clutch, all, or one by one;
- where the male and the female of the ended pairs will go: by default they stay in their current cage.
Pairs with a clutch in progress keep breeding unless you choose them: their next clutches count for the new season.
At the end, the dialog asks about the season that starts: Open a new season is on by default and below it you choose the Season year. If you turn it off, no season stays open until you open one from the list of seasons.
If there are no active pairs left, the action does not ask about relocation: it only closes the season and, if you want, opens the next one.
Recover the ended pairs
If you ended pairs you wanted to keep, tap the ended season in the list and use Recover the ended pairs: they are formed again, with their birds where they are now (if they were moved when ending, put them back in their breeding cage yourself). A pair whose female is already in another pair is not recovered. The season stays ended.
The season year
Each season counts towards a year. By default it is the current year, and you can choose another one when you open it or later with Change the year. If the season already has clutches, changing its year recounts them: the app tells you how many change before you save.
Choosing another year lets you start the next season early. If you open the 2027 season in October 2026, the clutches laid before 2027 arrives count towards 2027 in the Aviary summary; from January on, each clutch counts in its own year, as always. The season card shows which year it counts in.
With the current year nothing changes: each clutch counts in the year of its laying date.
While any of your devices is not updated to version 6.2.0, clutches there still count by their date.
Reopening a season
An ended season can be opened again with Reopen season. It becomes active again with no end date; the pairs that were ended stay ended and the birds stay where they are. If you want to keep breeding with them, form the pairs again.
Only one season is open at a time: the one open at that moment is closed, and its active pairs stay as they are. The app tells you before you confirm.
Statistics of a season
View statistics shows the breeding figures of that season: pairs, clutches, eggs, hatched and independent chicks, success and mortality. It counts the clutches laid between its start and its end (one laid on the day it is closed already counts in the next season) and the pairs that were together during those dates.
Breeding report —in the season's options and in the icon of its statistics— generates the PDF of the whole season: one page per pair, sorted by cage, ended pairs included, and a first summary page with one line per cage and the clutches of unknown father. The clutch rules: a pair ended on the very day the season was closed appears in the closing season with its earlier clutches and, if it laid that day, in the new one too. What each page holds is detailed in Pairs and clutches.
Separate a pair
From the detail of an active pair you can use Separate pair. It is the same idea as ending the season, but applied to that pair only.
The pair is not deleted: it becomes a historical pair, keeps its clutches and still shows its statistics. If the pair has already ended, the app shows the Ended label and does not offer to separate it again.
Relocate birds
When closing pairs you can choose where the male and the female go:
- Back to the previous cage: returns the bird to its previous location if there is enough history.
- Back to the cage of origin: returns it to the last cage not related to breeding before it was paired.
- Keep in the current cage: leaves the bird where it is.
- Move to a new cage: lets you choose a new location.
- Leave without a cage: leaves the bird with no location assigned.
When you choose a new cage, the app first shows the Available aviaries, because that is usually the most common destination when pairs are split up. You can turn on Also show other cages to pick another compatible type of cage.
If there is not enough history to return to the previous or origin cage, the bird stays in its current cage and the app tells you when the process finishes.
What is kept
Ending a season or separating a pair deletes nothing important:
- the pair is archived with its end date;
- its clutches remain available;
- statistics are kept;
- historical pairs still appear on the bird's record;
- cage movements are recorded in the history.
